Why You Need To Stop Dieting And Start Fasting

Ah, the Facebook memories, they can be an amazing reminder of a wonderful event that happened in last few years, however, when the FB memories pop up of time where you were working out and eating healthy it can really bring a woman down.

This happened to me this morning.

(which side note DO NOTE check FB first thing in the morning)

But in my defense, I had to check something out in one of my groups. And the memory was just there waiting for me.

Mocking me

Telling me that I am back to where I was 3 years ago.

Wow, isn’t it amazing how easy it can be to get sucked into bad habits, you know are not good for you? What I find for me is that when life gets in the way I fall right back to eating all the crap I know is not good for me. I stop working out because I think “Oh I don’t have time for that” When really working out is like praying. If you have too much to do or too much stress going on YOU NEED TO PRAY and WORK OUT MORE!

Fortunately, through trial and error and following the top fitness coaches on Instagram over the years I have learned to tell that little voice to shut up!

And to focus on small and regular changes to help me reach my goal.

And today I have drawn the line in the sand and I am starting on my goal again.

It really hurts to write that word… Again.

I have started and stopped so many times.

I totally know what it feels like stop doing my workouts and stop eating healthy.

So, I am making this public:

I AM NOT STOPING!

I would really like to know that what it feels like to not stop.

As the Queen of My Own Life

I need to treat my body like the Temple I know it is.

This is the body that God gave me, and I need to treat like the awesome and amazing body it is.

So, things I have learned over the last all most 30 years …

OH, MY GOD … that was even more painful.

But yes, I have been working out not really eating “healthy” (and the Healthy food industry has changed so much over the last 30+ years) for almost 30 years now.

Truth be told I do like to work out.

I love to feel the way my body feels as I move it and learn how strong I am.

OK enough about me…

On to what you came here for…

IT’S NOT A DIET!

Really the truth that the Health and Fitness gets right is yes it has to be a lifestyle you can’t just diet.

Now you may be thinking OK I want to lose weight and I have tried in the past, but nothing has really helped, and I just went back to my old ways…

This is so common. Did you know that the health food industry is a BILLION-dollar industry? Yeah creating a new diet or the next best Protein Shake is big money.  So, when you see a new Diet pop up on your news fed you need to ask yourself “how in the year 2018 we haven’t found the perfect Diet yet?”

That is because really the truth is that they set you up for failure before you even start.

I know it totally sucks that we can’t trust the Healthy Food Industry…

So instead of trusting blindly, you need to do your own research and find what really works for you. Because No DIET is ever going to work. You can’t go on a Diet and then go back to old ways and expect to keep the weight off. I know I have been there and I have failed every single time.

However, over the years I have found that the #1 lie that the Health Food Industry has told is that you must eat breakfast and/or 6 small meals a day to lose weight.

They can have all the “studies” they want but we are still losing the weight loss battle.

Full Disclosure I have never read Made to Crave…

I know shocker,

But I do love the basis of the book.

We are made to crave. We are made to love life and live life to the fullest.

And that includes food.

So yes, food is all around us and we live a life that we know we are going to eat every day.

Which brings me to fasting.

Now in the Bible fasting is nothing new, however, in the Health and Fitness Industry, it is considered a no-no.

But over the years I have found this works way better than any diet out there.

I have known fitness instructors who fly under the radar and don’t announce that they do the Intermit Fasting because everyone knows you need to eat breakfast and 6 small meals a day to lose weight.

When in reality the intermit fasting is extremely healthy and allows you to eat more and not feel deprived or that you are on diet (after the first week)

Just to give you a little background there are 4 types of Intermittent Fasting.

Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai:  “Go and gather together all the Jews of Susa and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will do the same. And then, though it is against the law, I will go in to see the king. If I must die, I must die.” So Mordecai went away and did everything as Esther had ordered him. Esther 4:15-17

#1: Leangains

Leangains was started by Martain Berkhan and is best for those who want to build muscle and shed body fat. This is personally the one I follow and is easiest to stick with (in my opinion).

How does Leangains work?

All you do is fast for 14 hours each day and then feed the remaining 8-10 hours.

The easiest way to think about this is that you’re already fasting when you’re sleeping, so you’re probably already fasting for at least 8 hours every night. This makes the fasting window a little longer, so you can eat dinner at 6 instead of 8, and push breakfast back to 10 instead of 7.

During the fasting period, you don’t consume any calories, but I do still drink coffee black. This helps with the hunger pains, especially during the first week.

(total side note: if you are a cream in your coffee type of Queen I highly recommend the Wake-Up Blend from Trader Joe’s it is smooth coffee and you don’t need creamer)

This kind of fasting becomes easy once you are consistent with it for a while. Your hunger hormones regulate to your feeding window, so as you push back your feeding window and you stay consistent with it, you won’t feel hungry until the hour you pick.

I like to eat dinner around 7. With kids in sports and my hubby that doesn’t come home until late and eat breakfast a little later like around 11 or 12 depending on what I am doing in the morning.

This one is personally my favorite and flexible. If I know I am going to Bible Study or a Mom’s Group in the Morning and would like to eat a little at say 9:30 am because you know it’s not a meeting unless you are eating, then I just stop eating at about 5 pm the night before. I think it’s easiest to stay consistent with and stick to long term!

 

#2: Eat Stop Eat

This intermittent fasting schedule was created by Brad Pilon and is best for healthy eaters who are looking for an extra boost.

How does Eat Stop Eat work? All you do is fast for 24 hours once or twice per week. During the fast, you don’t consume any food, but you can drink calorie-free beverages.

After the fast is over, you go back to eating normally.

“Act like you didn’t fast,” Pilon says. “Some people need to finish the fast at a normal mealtime with a big meal, while others are OK ending the fast with an afternoon snack. The time it, however, works best for you, and adjust your timing as your schedule changes,” he says.

Eating this way will reduce overall caloric intake without limiting what you’re eating on non-fast days. It just limits how often you eat.

Pilon doesn’t forbid any foods and doesn’t suggest weighing food or restricting your diet.

While some may see this as a pro, I think it could be a con and lead to binge eating. I’ve tried this and it’s so not for me. I eat way too much on fasting days

 

#3: The Warrior Diet

The Warrior Diet was started by Ori Hofmekler and is best for people who like to stay busy all day and eat all their calories at night

How does the warrior diet work? Essentially you fast 20 hours every day and eat one massive meal at night. It’s best for people who identify as ‘nocturnal eaters’, those who are programmed for nighttime eating.

Also, Dr. Burge also says “the best way to eat is during a 4-hour time window”

During the fasting phase, you can still eat raw fruits, veggies, a few servings of protein, or fresh juice, and is referred to as an ‘under eating’ fast.

This is intended to maximize the Sympathetic Nervous System’s “fight or flight” response, which is supposed to boost energy, promote alertness, and stimulate fat burning.

Some people like this way of eating because it saves a ton of time during the day (cooking, eating, and cleaning are time-consuming!).

I personally also do this to some extent if I am really busy during the day I can go until 3 or 4 without eating however I have found that when I just eat one big meal at night, I must go to bed right after because all the blood has rushed to my stomach and I don’t like that.

 

#4: Alternate-Day Fasting

Alternate day fasting was created by James Johnson, M.D. and is best for the most disciplined people with a specific goal.

How does it work? You eat very little one day (less than 500 calories), then you eat normally the next (2,000-2,500 calories).

I’ve tried this, and it is HARD. Especially if you’re working out on fasting days.

You’re essentially cutting your calories by 20-35% each week by fasting every other day, so yes, you’ll probably lose weight, but I find it’s easier to binge on feasting days, which negates the fasting days.

I totally and this just my personal option and is like what Queen Esther did for 3 days, it is really hard to stick to this one. I would only do it if you are really praying and wanting an answer from God.

So, during this challenge, we will be using #1 The Leangains. Using the Mediterranean Diet without really being on a diet but it is really hard to get around that word.

I will leave you with this … after all that being said there are really just two ways to get the body you want.

You Are What You Eat 2 Parter:

#1 You are what you eat: eat clean, minimally processed food. High protein and fat works often, but not always. Either way, break your normal routine now and then. Do something completely different. Learn to listen to your body. And don’t forget to have the occasional blowout!

#2 You are what you eat: you won’t get results if you’re feeding your mind, emotions and spirit junk. Or if you’re starving them! Failing to take care of the ‘whole’ you will result in feeling like dissatisfaction, lack of purpose, fear, anxiety, overwhelm. All of these are not only any fun to live with, but they cause a stress response! Primarily of cortisol, which is the belly fat storing hormone. Take care of every part of you as if it were a small child whom you love deeply. Learn to love and accept and nourish yourself from the inside out, and things you previously found impossible to achieve will start to come to you almost magically.

During this Health Challenge, we will be focusing on the whole body as the temple God created with mind, body, and spirit in mind.
